An exotic and colourful plant, stargazer lily (Lilium orientalis ‘Stargazer’) earns its name for its purple-pink blooms, which are tilted to face the sky. The plant is distinguished by tall, 3- to 5-foot stems, each with up to nine sweet-smelling flowers that measure as much as 8 inches in diameter.

It is a tough, easy to grow plant in spite of its stately appearance. Plant stargazer lily bulbs 4 to 6 inches deep and it will have 8 to 12 inches of space between each bulb. The plant prefers rich, well-drained soil. If the soil is poor, dig in 3 to 5 inches of decomposed manure or compost. For a natural effect, plant the bulbs in groups of five. Stargazer lilies thrive in a location where the blooms are in shade or filtered sunlight during the afternoon.
